The Physiology of Breath in Desert and Coastal Climates
In the geography of the Sultanate of Oman—spanning shimmering coastlines, rocky jagged ranges, and expansive desert dunes—our respiration is in continuous exchange with climate, temperature, and ambient humidity.
When atmospheric heat rises, the human heart naturally pumps faster, blood vessels dilate, and our respiratory rate tends to become shallow and upper-chest dominant. This subtle hyperventilation can trigger mild autonomic stress, leaving us fatigued, irritable, and depleted.
Pranayama (Prana = life-force energy, Yama / Ayama = expansion or regulation) offers a sophisticated internal science to recalibrate our internal thermostat and restore equilibrium.
Sitali & Sitkari: Ancient Cooling Breaths for Arabian Heat
Hatha yoga texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika describe specific breathing techniques dedicated to cooling body temperature and cleansing metabolic heat (Pitta):
- Sitali (The Cooling Breath): - Sit upright in a comfortable position with shoulders relaxed. - Curl the tongue into an 'O' tube shape, extending it slightly past the lips. - Inhale smoothly through the curled tongue, drawing air in as if drinking through a straw. Notice the immediate cooling sensation over the palate and throat. - Close the mouth, pause for a soft moment, and exhale slowly through both nostrils. - Practice for 12 to 15 rounds during warm midday hours to lower core perceived heat.
- Sitkari (For those who cannot roll the tongue): - Bring teeth gently together and draw the lips back into a soft smile. - Inhale with a gentle hiss through the spaces between the teeth, feeling the cool draft across the tongue. - Exhale smoothly through the nose.
Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) for Mental Clarity
Nadi Shodhana is one of the most clinically verified breathwork techniques for balancing left and right hemispheric brain activity.
By using the right hand in Vishnu Mudra to alternate air flow between the left nostril (Ida / cooling parasympathetic channel) and the right nostril (Pingala / heating sympathetic channel), you directly modulate the autonomic nervous system.
Practicing five minutes of balanced 4-second inhales and 6-second exhales before bed or prior to an important executive presentation in Muscat induces immediate cognitive clarity and grounded tranquility.
Breath as a Gateway to Deep Nature Sanctuary
At Journey with Nawal, breathwork is never practiced as dry mechanical exercises. Instead, it is an intimate somatic homecoming.
In our mountain sanctuaries atop Jabal Akhdar and coastal retreats in Salalah, we breathe with the ancient winds, combining rhythmic breath with quartz crystal sound resonance and sacred ceremonial cacao. When breath and sound unite, the mind settles effortlessly into profound peace.
